Artist Statement

Every piece I make is rooted in real places and real memories.

I grew up in the Carolinas and now live in Austin. Both places show up in the color palettes I gravitate toward, the subjects I keep returning to, the way I see a garden or a coastline or a new city for the first time. Botanicals, florals, landscapes, abstracts. The subject changes, but it all traces back to where I've been and what I still carry with me.

I work from memory more than from reference. I'm not trying to make an accurate picture of a place, I'm after what I remember about being there, which is usually the color and the light more than the shape of anything. The abstract work is the same thing with the subject taken out.

I trained as an artist, then spent about ten years designing for other people, most of it helping grow one brand from a small team to an IPO. When I came back to painting it felt like I knew exactly where I'd left off and had never really stopped.

I work in series because a place takes more than one attempt. The originals are where the thinking happens, and prints follow from a small number of them.
